WHY DIDN'T THE LEAVES LEAVE?

Whether or not your deciduous tree leaves turn brilliant colors at summer’s end, their complex mechanism to drop those leaves in autumn is truly amazing. But early cold snaps or extra-long warm spells can throw off a tree’s rhythm and prevent leaf drop. Why didn’t my tree lose its leaves this year? RUNNING WATERS

Have you seen this grate in any of your travels? Sometimes there is water running through it and sometimes not. When water is running it has a scent of chlorine. APB - IN SEARCH OF THE CALIFORNIA POPPY

There are only two places where we knew the California Poppy grew in or about Lambert Park. And, alas, each of these areas is no more. The first area was in the water retention area of the new Lambert Park Estates subdivision. That area has been regraded and the poppies have been lost. The other area was on the south side of Lambert Park by the bathrooms. But, alas, this area has also been graded to accommodate the new southern parking area of the park. DO SUNFLOWERS FOLLOW THE SUN?

It's sunflower season! Have you been really looking at them as you hike in Lambert Park? Are the flower heads facing the sun as it moves across the sky from east to west? In general, it appears to be so, but there are always a few independent sunflowers that face in the opposite or sideways directions. Why is that? COOPER OR SHARPIE?
|
One of the birds we have found in Lambert Park is a Cooper's Hawk. Another is a Sharp-Shinned Hawk (Sharpie). They are both medium sized hawks that are so similar that even experts have a hard time telling them apart! Find out more about them on the Cooper or Sharpie? page of Who Knew?.
